What are the best toys and board games? As someone who has played with toys and board games most of my 46 years, I definitely have some opinions on the subject. I also have two small boys so I am both acquainted with the toys of my generation and the current generation. Having two boys, I am also very familiar with video games, but that will definitely be the subject of another article.

So lets start with toys. There are some toys that seem fantastic on Christmas morning that really don't hold their value. For instance a race car track. Its fun to race the cars for a little while but after a while it gets boring. On the other hand, the new RC cars provide hours of fun. I definitely think those are some of the best of the recent toys. Some of the classic toys definitely belong on the list of best toys ever. I would include the Yo-Yo and Etch a Sketch in this category. For something a little bigger that two can play at, I would choose Electric Football. That is not a favorite of this generation, but I don't care. Its one of the best. I'm not sure what it is called but that bounce thing that kids hop on is also a classic. How about Battling Tops and Rockem SockEm Robots. Okay I am dating myself. But like I said, kids today play a lot more with video games than with toys.

Okay, lets move on to board games. The all time best has to be Monopoly. There is nothing like a family game of monopoly. (Especially when its raining on a Saturday afternoon). I would put scrabble number two on the list, and Clue at number 3. I do notice that if I can pry my kids away from the video games, they really enjoy a board game. And when they were really young, they liked two other classic; Candyland and Shoots and Ladders. Well, its New Years Day Today. I think its time to pull out a board game and play!

Harry Skillings loves playing with toys and board games with his sons and family. As far as board games go, he recommends Quirkle Quirkle has a chance to be a new Classic.
